slides and then we'll t- I'll turn it over to Zane to get into the meat of the actual demoing of why we're here. So the first thing I wanna come up is, like, you notice that we say resilience. We're not talking about just data security as, as a simple concept anymore. It's resilience about your data across a multitude of things.

And why would you actually think about this? And I'm sure folks on this call probably are familiar. There's obviously, we know natural disasters hit. We know fires happen in data centers. I, I keep thinking of that OVH one that happened, God, probably five years ago now,

over in Europe. Uh- Mm-hmm. Yeah you know, accidents do happen by people. Humans do make mistakes. Anybody that's heard me talk about this, again, I've was an admin of the first 15 years of my career, and I've made my share of blunders that took things offline, whether it be bad

DNS entries or putting in a bad routing table into a Cisco switch. And of course, the ever-present ransomware, right? Like everybody- Absolutely ransomware, ransomware, ransomware. Everybody knows about ransomware. But so when you think about protection or data protection, it's more about the resiliency of

your data, not necessarily how you get there, but also why you're gonna get what it's going to accomplish for you. So when you think about that or how we think about it from a Everpure, I almost said Pure, Zane, um- It's still in the name. It's there yeah, we view it as a layered resiliency.

And you'll see on the next slide what we mean by the layers, but I like to think of it as, you know, a, a, a burrito or a taco dip, right? Everything builds up on top of each other. But what we're really talking about is a combination of primary, secondary, and tertiary storage options, right?

So your primary array, your secondary array, maybe it's, you know, the DR you're in an ActiveCluster situation where you're doing secret synchronization. But obviously just having multiple copies of that data. Tertiary, you know, maybe it's a backup target. You've got a FlashArray//C or E or a Flash Blade somewhere else that, that's just holding

the backups and whatnot. But on top of that, not only is th- that what, it's also part of the how as comes into those different options, right? So you, you have different storage requirements for something that's gonna be your primary system as opposed to what might be your secondary or tertiary array.

Like, obviously you could use one thing for all of them if it meets your technical requirements, but that's more than likely not the actual case. And one thing that I know is close to Zane's heart is also all these things need to come in with automation, right? Like stuff that you don't have to point and click multiple times.

You can automate it, which will bring consistency to that resilience strategy. And of course- Yeah this will just ensure your data against disasters, cyber attacks, you know, even if one or more of these layers fail, right? So I've said layers a few time, a few times. What are we actually talking about?

So if you think of this diagram as being inside your FlashArray, let's say, as you got the FlashArray at the top in the circle. Going from the bottom up, you know, data at rest encryption is pretty much a kind of a standard these days. You wanna encrypt your data.

We've got immutable snapshots. So for us, that snapshot's with immutable means, I had to look this one up, Zane, 'cause I know, especially the next word, you know you can't change them. Once they're there, you can't change them, right? That helps with the ransomware protection- Right and that security.

Sorry, Zane, were you gonna say something? Well, I'm saying snapshots are that just by default, right? I'm- Right taking a pointer in time. That's kind of the whole point of it, so. Right. We just now call them immutable because now we get into the next layer, which is, indelible, which is another word I had to look up- Yeah about a year and a half ago, two years ago.

So it's that concept- I feel like it's been a real word- like you can take the snapshot- prior to- Oh, sorry, Zane, go ahead backup companies and Pure. It's, it's- Yeah been an actual word. It's in the dictionary. Yeah, and I think a SafeMode is like that old Seinfeld skit where I'm dating myself is like, you can take the snapshot, but can you hold

the snapshot? And that's really what SafeMode does, is you can take the snapshot, but it puts a locking mechanism on that snapshot. Meaning for indelible means you can't delete it. Like, so a bad actor can't go in and just delete it, right? Because obviously, if you're dealing with a ransomware scenario, the first thing they

wanna do, well, second thing after they get into your environment, is making sure you can't recover from your environment. That's usually going after backups or snapshots or anything that's gonna let you- recover your data. Now, these two options are the things that we're gonna focus on the most today.

But building on top of those layers, we get into synchronous replication, which is our ActiveCluster solution, so you're, you know, you've got read/write activity between two arrays. You know, maybe you've got a campus or you're in a data center where you've or you've got enough networking to kinda handle that traffic between the sites.

And then finally, synchronous replication where maybe that's, like, our active DR, so you're replicating over long distance, thinking, I'm in Seattle, so, like, I got a data center in Seattle and I need to to my DR site in New York, so I'm going the country, and I need still a decent RPO/RTO, but I don't need that same level of requirement that I would get with synchronous replication.

Yeah, it's a- And then finally- It's, it's- Oh, go ahead near-zero RPO is what we call for Active DR, if you're not familiar. We don't have the demo of it today, but I can even kind of point it around in the lab if anybody wants to see it. I guess it's not quite a future 'cause it's actually in the next release.

We're gonna combine ActiveCluster and Active DR so you can even further improve- Oh that, that, that, that resiliency pattern to give you that near-zero RPO at distance, but that high availability- Little, little sneak peek- campus or rack-and-stack from Zane today. Yeah, yeah. I don't, I don't have that prepared today, but I will say that's, that's on the it's almost on the truck.

Now, this diagram hasn't really changed that much other than the fact that we've incorporated Pure1, which is our, phone home portal that's got lots of ways to view your storage, your security, your performance, all those things, and that's also something

that Zane will get in today s- as well. So it's goes be- the layers are obviously is what's the features and functionalities within our systems and then the observability that you get by leveraging, Pure1. Hopefully, if you're a VMware shop and you're using, like, like, our VM analytics tool, Pure1 won't be too new to you.

But we do have a section on that, that, for folks to kind of poke around and see that because that's something that's, I would say, Zane, is heavily used, but probably should be heavily used- Should be or more used. Yeah. Right? Yeah, it's comes with every array, right? Every fleet of arrays.

It's a very powerful tool. I'd also say, changes at the speed of cloud, so, like, a lot of features go into that cause it doesn't necessarily rely on the hardware upgrades- Sure or even software upgrades on-premises. So, very useful tool if you're not using it today. We'll show you a little bit of it today.

Let's start with the first well, our second layer, but our first layer. Let's talk about snapshots. And for those that may be new to Pure1 familiar, Zane, why don't you walk us through how our snapshots work and how they're different and better than what the- Yeah average storage array would be providing. So yeah, FlashArray snapshots are fantastic.

They are the fastest thing to give you data protection and even in a lot of cases, the fastest way to recover from, from an event. Especially, you know, we're gonna kinda focus on local today, with snapshots and SafeMode, but all this translates into replication. But especially from events that are I just need to bring back a lot of data at once, I

have a cyber event, I don't necessarily wanna go to a DR site, right? Snapshots are gonna be your first go-to. And we even have integrations with a lot of backup vendors. If you're not using them today, we're our snapshots are utilized in that recovery. Not gonna say snapshots are backup.

Remember companies saying that? Yeah, I know. I'm just saying it's part of a strategy, right? And, and, and, and we do our part. Um- Don't let the pitchforks get out, Zane, with the- Yeah. I know. I've done other presentations.

I have a picture of Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots, snapshots versus backup. I don't think it's a versus, I think it's an and. So yeah, our snapshots are, are instant, right? That's this is why I say this. So they are first thing up there, 100% immutable.

We'll show you how to make them indelible. But they're instance. They're basically pointers to essentially the same data that's in the volume, and you kinda see that down there. Snapshots are just new volumes. They're actually the same volume with a new logical tag.

That's why you can get so many copies of them instantly and not have any data, change. That's actually gonna come into play with, with SafeMode where we talk about that. And you can essentially they're just read-only and you but and they're not mounted, and you can mount them at any time. I can recover them to a volume.

Show you a little bit of that. I can take them to new volumes. I can send them to other arrays. Very powerful. And they essentially don't waste space, as I kind of alluded to, on, on inset. So I take a snapshot, it's, it's essentially free, right?

It's just gonna be whatever data changes over time, that's what's, what's gonna, increase the delta, if you will, and put space on the array. So they're, they're pretty zero cost, especially if you're doing some, maybe some limited operation where you just need data protection for a second, or you do wanna build that in, which we recommend, over time to give you again, just, just those

what you're gonna have to, have to accom- compensate for. And so that's why they're thin, deduplication, compressed, all that thing. But even though they are thin, it seem like they would rely on the other data, they're all independent, so I can delete snapshots. Well, unless they're indelible, right?

As we'll talk about. But you can remove snapshots in that add other ones, and they're not gonna the, on the, on the ch- on the snapshot them, at least with, with regard to blocks. So very powerful. Can take snapshots, use them wherever I need to.

One other thing I'll mention about our replication and our, and our snapshots and such, and again, this might be a little advanced, beyond this, but I always like to mention it-Pure is really-- or Everpure, our FlashArrays, our FlashBlades are really just a KVDB. As data comes in, we, we index it, you know, hash it out.

So no matter where I send this data to another FlashArray, we already understand what those blocks are, right? What that hash is. So I can We talk about some of the I can iterate through those different replication layers. I don't have to have a rebaseline, right?

It's again, it's always just deltas. It's always just change that I have to match up on if it's, if it's another array or the same array. And hopefully that makes sense. But I think it's very powerful, right? We're really easy to move the data around, really easy to be signatured, to be able to

pull up and use in any manner that you need to, whether that be recovery, test name it, you're able to do it very simply and, with minimal very efficiently. I've said kind of a lot there, but it's a hundred percent metadata. Snapshots are snapshots. And when we go into SafeMode, it's also important to note this isn't like some other

type of snapshot, really. And, and this is true of Pure, now Everpure. I guess that's kinda why we took Evergreen and Pure and put it together, is we build on top of those layers as we go, right? We have that incredibly, KVDB.

We put snapshots on there that are pointers to the data, and then we can lock those pointers, with SafeMode. We don't create other buckets of, of, of, of snapshot things or have to move data or, or co- or really account for other space, right? So again, very, very efficiently is how we do things. We just kinda build on top of what was there before.

And with that- Almost like it's layered, Zane. Almost like it's layered. It's almost like you knew. So with that, I mean, we can talk about it all day, right? Hey, snapshots are great, and hopefully some of you have actually, used them. But I would like to do some basic.

We're gonna kinda walk through here. We got a prepared demo here. If we need to do anything beyond, we can pull up the lab later. I am in a FlashArray dashboard, so hopefully many of you are used to this. If you're not, this is what it looks like.

Under Storage on the left, I could go under Volumes, and that's what we're gonna deal with. We're gonna kinda deal with one volume today. A couple of volumes, really, but we're gonna look in the volume. So we can search volumes across I have this volume called SME Volume One. And in here, when you click into it, this is where you can do all the operations to connect

them to hosts, make them useful, right? Present that data to something. We're gonna use host groups in this one. Host groups are just If you're not, it's just kind of a logical grouping so that it's just a lot easier to do the provisioning, right?

This host always goes to this group 'cause maybe it's a VMware cluster or something, which I think exactly what that is. We can see the snapshots right there on the right. Some of the stuff I was talking about. Copy, that's if I wanna take it to a new volume, so really a, a clone.

Restore, if I wanna move it over an old volume. Funny, if you use copy, and I'll show you that, you can actually name it the same as a volume that exists and restore over it, so it's almost a restore. That's our protection group at the top, and that's where we're really gonna see the magic. So that's A protection group is where we set snapshot policy.

And just to kinda show as an example here, that one already has one assigned. When you make a volume, we actually make it default easy for you to be protected. We always have a default protection group there. You can change that setting on creation 'cause SafeMode might be on it, as we'll see in a minute. But that's why this volume, this, volume was

created with a protection group. So on the inset, you can automatically add a protection group to it. We do that by default, again, so you don't You know, human error, we don't slip up. It's automated, as you were saying before. It's secure out of the box is what Like, by default.

Like, so if nobody sets this up like a, a PG group, we've got one already out that would be configured, is kinda what I'm getting out of that Zane. Yep, out of the box. So we, we make one for you. Sorry, that got backed up, so we'll just kinda go through that. We make one for you, but you can also set your own defaults and just always add them.

So if someone creates a volume ad hoc, you know it's gonna be protected day one, and you can always correct that and change that later. So yeah, default out of the box. I hit something there and restarted that. Sorry. So we go back into the protection group.

This is where we're gonna control everything of what that protection So you see members on the left. Also kind of with automation, I always, I always like to talk about maybe policy. You can set a few protection groups and add them to many volumes, right? I don't have to just say, you know, one to one or these protection groups to those.

I can have a list like I show here, but I can add many volumes to the same protection group. So maybe I got a couple policies, makes it a lot easier to, to go edit them later and, and, and manage. That's where you can add and remove members or, again, on the creation go into the volume, right? A couple places you can do that.

But this just represents where, you know, what's, what's assigned to this policy. Over here on the snapshot schedule, it's exactly what you think. It's where we set the snapshot schedule, and it's, it's pretty simple. You're gonna tell it how many-- how often you wanna create a snapshot. So in this case, I got six hours.

I can even do the start time there at. We'll have the retention, so ticking every six hours, obviously through the day. And then do I wanna retain all those snapshots for an additional period of time? So I want every six hours, and I want them for seven days, fourteen days. I have one day here. Very simple policy.

It's just, hey, I'm gonna take them every hour or every so often, it's an interval, and how long am I gonna keep them? And then, of course, there's replication in there. We're not gonna deal with that today. And then you can You know, I, I didn't note, you can also keep snapshots for an additional period of time, like maybe one a day for an additional thirty days or whatever.

So whatever your policy is, whatever you need. Replication, like I mentioned, is also handled here. We're not gonna turn that on today. And then we see SafeMode on the bottom, but we'll return to that at a later, point.So it is interesting to note, I showed snapshots before.

There are snapshots out of a protection group, and there are snapshots in a So these are the source protection group snapshots, right? Those automated ones that are gonna be taken in that interval, as I just showed. I can create additional there, ad hoc. I can rename the snapshot.

Got some controls here. We can, you know, clone that policy. This is where I can do recovery, so I can restore the volume from a snapshot. So from that protection group snapshot, I can take that back to a volume, or I can copy it. Again, copy is a clone, if you will. We just call it PureVol copy.

And really easy operation you can do there. So this is, this is the copy operation. I can name it whatever volume I want. Again, if I do name it a volume that exists, I can hit that little overwrite toggle. So I can recover directly to the volume it's associated with, or I can take that data and

recover it to another volume, right? I have a lot of power here. And again, protection group, default protection on by default. It's right there. You can make that change. Again, add it to the real group you want or remove the protection

group if you don't need it. So all that's at your fingertips. Very simple in one menu. So two things, Zane, I wanna touch on really quick that I wanna make sure I g- I grasp what you said. So you mentioned the ad hoc or let's say the one-off or the manual snapshot that you can create.

Yep. Does that follow the same protection group timeline for like how long is it kept? Or is that something then you'd have to go back and manually remove? Or you just Are you manually triggering the protection group to take the snapshot? If that makes sense. Oh, yeah. So once, once you assign this a

there, though, is there are snapshots in protection groups and snapshots outside of protection groups. And when we get into SafeMode, I'll show how, outside of a protection group, is where you can maybe do those more ad hoc operations, like backup software is where it lives. I just need to take something temporarily.

There we go. And I think I went a little Maybe we went a little ahead here, but that's, that's the copy function. I'm actually gonna copy it here to show in another example. So I'm taking the data from that protection group snapshot.

I'm creating a brand-new volume from that snapshot, so it's a clone. And we'll see that it's under volumes as a separate entity, right? Vol. Two. So I've taken volume one, and I've made vol. Two exact copy at this moment.

If I change anything in either one, that's where the delta would be. But right now, there's a zero, gain, but I have two volumes, two distinct volumes that have can be attached to D- distinct hosts and, and whatnot. Have different signatures. If it was VMware, obviously I'd have different signatures. I could bring those VMs up.

If it was SQL, same, same, same, right? So really easy to do. This is where I was gonna kinda show how you can create volume snapshots. So kind of actually what you were, you were asking about. This is outside of the protection group.

I go into volume snapshots. I see the protection group on there. It's actually named PG SME, SME, so it, it follows that protection group name. But the one I just created has, just the name of the volume and then Snap 1, which I named it.

So that's how you can kinda distinguish what snapshots are which. You'll see I destroyed that. Everything that is deleted, we don't remove, initially. It actually goes into this destroyed bucket. This is actually key for SafeMode.

And we'll see here, I can do recovery. I can remove it, or I truly eradicate it from the array. Otherwise it'd sit there for about a day, right? We have a day timer on that by default that it'll just kinda sit there for twenty-four hours, and you can always bring those back.

But I made a snapshot outside of the policy. I deleted it, eradicated it fully. And we can see that that also follows suit here inside the protection group. Again, there's snapshots outside, snapshots inside. When I delete them, this is really true of any object on a, on FlashArray.

You have to do a two-step process to actually delete it and eradicate it. But I'm gonna go ahead and recover it. Recovery doesn't put it back to the array. I'm taking it out of the eradication bucket and putting it back to where and essentially just a two-step process there.

And that's actually gonna be real key when we get into SafeMode, how that works. Yeah, spoiler alert on that one, but yes. Well, that's kinda why we're talking about this. Yeah, yeah. We're just- I just wanna make sure the eradication, the deal, part is, is

when you delete an object from FlashArray, it always goes into that recycle bin, that re- eradication bin, and you have to double r- delete it, or it runs out after that timer, at that timer pieces up. So I think almost when you, when you dig through this, it makes this sound a lot more elaborate and a lot more complicated than it is.

But basically, volumes are objects. You can attach them to hosts, inside here or host groups as we've done. We have snapshots. Oh, I do, I do wanna point in this. That was that bo- that send I talked about. We don't really do this, but one other trick, and this used to be just a CLI

think early 6.10 or 6.0 this came about. You can actually send a snapshot to another array. So in that example, there was an array in the dropdown menu. There's probably already a relationship with this array, meaning there's a replica of that arrayUh, I'm sorry.

There's my replica or replica relationship already. I can also just take an ad hoc, snapshot and just send it to that array. So I can say, "Hey, I want this data over there." Maybe I took a snapshot and I wanna send it. Maybe I have, one that I don't have over there. Whatever the case may be, I can easily set those up over there.

So you're talking about kind of a tier, tierary storage. I can have a lot of power there to be able to go, "Hey, I really need this maybe there was a ransomware event and your array is a crime scene, right? And you're like, "Hey, I have a copy, a good copy of it, but I can't use it on this physical device, so I'm gonna go send it to a device where that data didn't live before so

it's no longer, you know, a crime scene. There's not caution tape around it. You know, the feds or insurance aren't- aren't- aren't, saying I can't touch this Array. But I need to get back to work," right? So just a kind of an ad hoc functionality if you didn't already have

those replicas over there. I think that's the first time I've ever heard crime scene mentioned with, with storage. So I've I mean, it makes sense. I get what you're saying, but I've never, I've never thought about it that way- Well, forensics. I guess forensics- Yeah.

No, I know would be a better term to go. I like to do one more dramatic. It's 20- it's 2026, y'all. Like- Yeah, yeah, yeah and I know in your- CSI's coming in in your day-to-day, you probably run into that, so- Yeah I, yeah. Anyways. Hopefully that made sense. video, but, but yeah, protection groups is where you control snapshots, even the replication schedule. You got the eradication bins, and then there's snapshots in and outside of a and that's, that's kind of an important, of the important points to take from there. And then you have a lot of control on where that data can go, right?

Where just, hey, you need it in this Array, you need it on the same Array. You need 90 copies of the same volume, which by the way, makes your DR look really cool, right? It's like greater than 100. Go in there and make a bunch of snapshots today and see how great your DR goes through

the roof. It's not real, but technically you have that many copies of that volume, right? All right. But we build on that, right, with, with Safe Mode, which is the WEKA just did the, immutable part. Now we're gonna get into the indelible part, aren't we?

Yeah, I love the indelible part. Yeah. So Zade, you kinda took a little bit of my thunder, but so building on what Zane kind of walked through with the snapshotting, especially the deletion, right? So this is kind of my crude attempt of what visualizing what that looks like. So, you know, you've g- you've got an array, you've got some snaps on it.

You de- you delete them or destroy them, to use our terminology, so we destroy, and I'm doing air quotes 'cause it's not really destroyed. Yeah, I know. So you destroy the snapshot. It sounds scary, doesn't it? Right. It goes into this eradication bucket, and this is really where SafeMode comes in, 'cause

SafeMode now is going to set a lock and a timer on this eradication bucket for when something can actually then be eradicated or re- completely really removed off the system, thus in the diagram going into kind of what I made as a trash bin, right? So, so you can delete the snapshot, but it's not gonna be gone until this timer And again, this is where that ransomware protection or that security comes in, 'cause

again, you will have a timer on this. You know, by default it's 14 days, but you can set it for as little as one or a maximum of 30. What the new one will b- will support is the Linux going forward, so now they have a Linux appliance. For those of you that maybe don't know, Veeam has moved to a Linux appliance.
