Each refresh required about four months of work to review storage design, revisit backup configurations, and complete a large-scale data migration. In addition to that recurring effort, the team also had to manage capacity constraints and the operational burden of backup management, making the environment increasingly difficult to sustain.

Founded in 1929, DAI NIPPON TORYO is a Japanese coatings manufacturer serving markets including infrastructure, architecture, automotive, industrial plants, and housing. The company provides a broad portfolio of paints and jet inks, with particular strength in heavy-duty corrosion protection technology that helps support social infrastructure, buildings, and everyday environments. Its thick-film fluororesin coating V-Flon HB has been used on iconic structures such as the tallest broadcasting tower in Japan.

DAI NIPPON TORYO's company-wide file server had been replaced about every five years. Each refresh required roughly four months of work, including storage design reviews, backup configuration changes, and large-scale data migration, placing a significant burden on the IT department.

At the same time, day-to-day operations had become increasingly difficult. Capacity constraints meant employees were regularly asked to delete unnecessary files, while the legacy network-attached storage (NAS) environment required ongoing effort for failure response, backup operations, and recovery of accidentally deleted data.

To address these challenges, DAI NIPPON TORYO decided to modernise its company-wide file server environment.
